Austin Schools

The largest educational facility in Austin, and in Texas, is the University of Texas at Austin, with more than 46,000 students and some 14,000 faculty and staff. It is the centerpiece of the University of Texas System, which has campuses in other Texas cities. Other colleges and universities in Austin include St. Edward's University, Concordia University, Austin Community College, Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and Huston-Tillotson University.

Public education in Austin is well-served by more than 300 schools in 12 independent school districts in and around the Austin metro area. Those districts have more than 190 elementary schools, 97 middle schools and 73 high schools, and there are another 60 private schools in the greater Austin metro area. The emphasis on education in Austin recently earned the city the honor of being the 16th most literate city in America.
